Maj Surendra Poonia
I-2 Batch AFMC
Major Surendra Poonia (I2) participated for the first time this year in the 31st World
Medical & Health Games held in Porec, Croatia from July 3-10 2010 as an
independent candidate, in the under 35 age category. He won the following medals–
1. Gold Medal in Power Lifting
2. Silver medal in Discus Throw
3. Bronze Medal in Javelin Throw
The World Medical & Health Games is an international sporting event open
exclusively to all health professionals from all disciplines. This year more than 2700
athletes from 47 countries participated in 22 sports in an Olympic spirit many of
whom represented their national teams. Her Excellency, the Honorable President of
India, Smt Pratibha Devi Singh Patil felicitated him for his outstanding achievement.
Major Poonia belongs to a small village Rajpura in Sikar district near Jhunjhunu
of Rajastahn. He is an I2 batcher who was commissioned into the Army Medical
Corps (AMC) in August 2001. He is currently serving with The President’s Bodyguard,
Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi as the Medical Officer. He is a keen sportsman and
a medal winner both at the college and university level. He joined the Parachute
Regiment and then the elitest Special Forces of the Indian Army. He was awarded
Chief of Army Staff Commendation while serving with 10 Para SF in J&K for
