The Armed Forces Medical College was initially formed on 01 May 1948 as a unique medical institution where postgraduate course preceded undergraduate facilities.

The initial site of AFMC was the present location, of the Army Institute of Physical Training. This location although ideal for training, was inconvenient for the trainees as it was two miles away from the dependant Military hospital complex. Soon after, the institution moved westwards to its present location.

Subsequently, the work on the present monument began in 1953 and was completed in August 1956. The total cost of the building including the furnishing was approximate 38.40 lakhs of rupees! It has 245 large rooms and also a beautiful auditorium named after the sage “Bharadwaja”. To this day the auditorium is in regular use and a popular venue for all conferences. The fine acoustics in this auditorium are still marveled at.

The Graduate Wing- From Dream to Reality

Since the infrastructure was already available, it was envisioned to convert AFMC into a full fledged Medical College with undergraduate facilities. The then Defence Minister, Shri VK Krishna Menon laid down  the foundation stone of the Graduate Wing of the College on 04 August 1962. AFMC was born!! The first undergraduate batch(A Batch) joined the college in 1962 and thus began a new era in the saga of Armed Forces Medical College which was to make a significant contribution and impact both nationally and internationally in the coming years.
4th August this year is being celebrated at ITC Hotel, The Maurya, Diplomatic Enclave, New Delhi. This has been the venue for the celebrations since 1988.
